 Medicine
User friendly, fast and yet precise diagnostics is a paramount requirement
in medicine. PAS-Analytik offers a breath analyzer for the Helicbacter Pylori
test. Further breath tests like e.g. for asthma tests are currently under
development.
The discovery of the bacterium "Helicobacter pylori" being the most common cause for ulcers won the Nobel prize in medicine to the
two Australian scientists Marshall und Warren in october 2005. Half the world's population is in fact infected with this gastric germ
which in some people can cause peptic ulcers and cancer in the worst case.
Apart from the classical invasive methods (gastroscopy) the bacterium can also be diagnosed by non-invasive methods like
antigen/faeces test or breath tests. PAS-Analytik developed a simple device for a breath test: a diode laser
(the size of a pointer) sends infrared light into a small cell containing the breath sample, where the emitted light will be converted into
a sound wave to be picked up with a special microphone. Details explaining this so-called photoacoustic effect
(hence the name PAS = PhotoAcoustic Sensors) are put forward in the paragraph Photoacoustic Effect -
by the way: the 2005 Nobel prize in physics was awarded for discoveries in optics.
